What does a Chiropractic Adjustment Feel Like Dr. Mix Trussville
Chiropractic Adjustment
What does a chiropractic adjustment or manipulation feel like? That is a tough question. I mean, it’s kind of like asking what shape is a snowflake? Gosh, there are so many different types of chiropractors and different types of techniques for a chiropractic adjustment. I can tell you, however, with certainty what the chiropractic adjustment feels like at our office. As a wellness family chiropractor, I have been practicing for over 11 years. Skilled with a wide variety of techniques. My secret to giving a good chiropractic adjustment is to find a technique that is both effective and gentle just for you. My primary goal is to make you, the patient, feel comfortable.
The chiropractic adjustment does not hurt; as a matter of fact my patients all agree it feels good.
Why does a chiropractic adjustment feel good?
One reason the chiropractic adjustment feels good is because good chiropractors DC's, do their homework before laying on finger on you. As a matter of fact, before any adjustment is preformed at the chiropractic clinic, he will first meet for a one-on-one consultation. Regardless of your reason for coming in, such as low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, headaches, Fibromyalgia, etc…
Chiropractors will not perform a chiropractic adjustment on you until diagnostic tests are performed and a diagnosis is reached. On your following visit your Dr. will tell you upfront if he believes a safe and alternative natural chiropractic therapy is right for you. If he cannot help, he will refer you to another doctor better suited for you. If he believes he can help you, finally comes the moment you were waiting for … your first chiropractic adjustment.
Here is what a typical chiropractic adjustment is like, step-by-step: Your chiropractic adjustment will usually start with you to laying on your stomach. The reason is because your doctor is checking your leg lengths. If one of your legs is shorter, this tells him which side of your back the muscle tension is on. They may then ask you to lie on your side, facing them. They will pause to explain exactly what he will do and what will happen next. He always starts with a gentle technique. Gentle enough that you are comfortable at all times, yet effective enough that you will feel better by the time you leave. Yes, it works that fast.
One technique often used in chiropractic adjustment is the Thompson technique. During this technique the table will drop about ½ inch. It doesn’t feel like much, but the subtle drop can shift the spine in proper alignment and loosens up stiffness in the spinal joints. It feels great, and it doesn’t hurt a bit. Then he will work his way up your back as he gently stretches and massages the spine feeling for areas of tension or stiffness. Again, it feels wonderful.
If he finds a place in your back or neck that is “stuck” he will explain everything before he does anything. The chiropractic adjustment, I explains, is kind of like a golf swing. It’s not force; it is the technique that counts. Nice, easy, and purposeful. Chiropractic adjustment hugs.
After surveying patients, their most favorite chiropractic adjustment is the famous “hug” move. For this chiropractic adjustment you will sit-up at the end of the table. You grab your shoulders (like giving yourself a hug) and all your stress and tension are about to vanish as he leans you back and unlocks the fixations along your spine. You may hear some popping sounds. It feels wonderful.
Before you go and after your chiropractic adjustment, he will palpate your neck with his fingers - again feeling for any spinal joints not moving correctly. Most people are nervous about their necks getting adjusted. Take a deep breath and relax. This is what Dr.'s of Chiropractic do best. Many people love the “popping” sounds, other do not. Most will do a chiropractic adjustment according to you comfort level. If you are nervous he will use a soft technique, such as an activator (a little instrument that gently “taps”.
This instrument is especially effective on children or areas of arthritis because it is so gentle). But the occasional person who cannot handle the thought of a neck chiropractic adjustment, he’ll massage your neck instead. Trigger point therapy is one of my favorite massage technique to perform. No worries. He’ll help you feel better and improve your health at the same time as making sure you are comfortable with your first chiropractic adjustment . He saves the best part for last. Following your chiropractic adjustment, depending on your condition, he may recommend you relax on the mechanical massage table for awhile, or have muscle inferential done (with feels like an internal massage), or lay on the neck or low back decompression table which gentle stretches your spine taking the pressure off your pinched nerves and relaxes your back or neck muscles. Like I said, you will feel wonderful by the time you leave from your chiropractic adjustment appointment.
As a matter of fact, as you leave the chiropractic clinic, you’ll probably say to yourself “gosh, that wasn’t nearly what I thought it would be like. I had nothing to be scared and nervous about”. And after a week or two of alternative wellness family chiropractic care you will see results and begin looking forward to your next chiropractic adjustment.
